I sampled and ranked eight popular prebiotic cola brands, assessing them based on cola flavor, perceived quality, caffeine content, and overall taste. For details on my criteria, see the methodology section at the end. Although many didn’t quite measure up, a few brands succeeded in replicating the true cola flavor while remaining gut-friendly.
8. Cove Classic Cola
Taking the bottom spot is Cove’s Classic Cola, and I found it to be quite disappointing. To start, it’s labeled as a probiotic soda, not a prebiotic one. The overly sweet flavor, attributed to zero sugar but heavy on stevia, left me perplexed. The result just felt artificial, which detracted from the experience altogether.
Sadly, Cove Classic Cola lacked a robust cola flavor and didn’t pack any caffeine. While it had a slight cola essence, it missed the mark on traditional taste. At $2.79 per can, it was one of the priciest options on the market, and given the mediocre flavor, it easily landed in last place.
7. Sunsip Classic Cola
Next on the list is Sunsip Classic Cola, which performed somewhat better, but still couldn’t impress. Its sweetness comes from fruit juice and agave, avoiding stevia altogether, yet it still struck me as vaguely artificial.
The biggest issue was that Sunsip Classic Cola didn’t really taste like cola. Instead, it resembled a sugary candy drink, with a hint of cola flavor lurking in the aftertaste. While not awful, it certainly wouldn’t satisfy a cola craving. Priced at $2.49 per can, I wouldn’t consider it a worthwhile purchase when there are better options available.
6. Live Fountain Cola
Sixth place goes to Live Fountain Cola. Although it didn’t look or taste much like traditional cola, its flavor was pleasant. It had a lighter golden hue and a subtle sweetness that felt bubbly and refreshing, hitting the soda spot.
Live Fountain Cola managed to strike a balance, avoiding the usual stevia aftertaste thanks to its blend of stevia and organic cane sugar. While it won’t quite satisfy a classic cola craving, at $2.50 per can, it’s a decent alternative.
5. Slice Cola
Slice Cola stands out as one of the priciest prebiotic sodas I sampled at $3.11 per can, yet it surpassed the last few contenders in taste and quality. Unlike the previous drinks, Slice Cola boasts caffeine derived from green tea, adding to its desirability.
This cola presented the typical dark color we expect, enhancing the overall drinking experience. The flavor profile was solid, offering an adequate amount of sweetness from a mix of stevia and organic cane sugar. If only it were a touch sweeter, it could have more closely resembled traditional cola.
4. Poppi Classic Cola
Poppi Classic Cola earned the fourth spot and did well in flavor and overall quality. At just $2 per can, it offers good value compared to prior entries.
Made with organic cane sugar and stevia, Poppi provides a taste that closely resembles classic cola — sweet and refreshing. The presence of 40 mg of natural caffeine adds even more appeal. While there are some discussions around its health claims, in terms of cola flavor, Poppi holds its own competition.
3. Popwell Classic Cola
In third place, I found Popwell Classic Cola to deliver the boldest cola flavor thus far. Its color, a pale orange-red, surprised me with how packed it was with rich flavor.
Boasting 40 mg of natural caffeine, it offers a little boost while supporting gut health. Priced at $1.67, it’s affordable too. While its sweetness derives from stevia, it doesn’t deter from the overall positive experience. Although it ranked third, I would happily buy it again.
2. Olipop Vintage Cola
Securing the second place, Olipop’s Vintage Cola definitely impressed. Known for its brand recognition, it surprised me with its flavorful profile that exceeded many earlier contenders.
Rich in classic cola taste, Olipop Vintage Cola was pleasantly sweet. Despite using stevia, there was no unpleasant aftertaste. With 50 mg of caffeine from green tea, it’s a dynamic choice, combining sweetness with carbonation. The high price of $2.49 might be worth it for enthusiasts.
1. 365 By Whole Foods Market Organic Cola
Claiming the top spot is 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Cola, which truly competes with traditional colas. Its classic flavor profile felt spot-on, and it was undoubtedly the best I tasted.
With an enjoyable sweetness from stevia and organic cane sugar, the taste was spot on. The caffeine level of 32 mg per can added an energizing element, and at $1.99, it presents incredible value. I could easily see this soda becoming a regular in my fridge.
Methodology
I evaluated all the prebiotic colas by tasting them both directly from the can and poured into a glass. My rankings were derived based on cola flavor presence, perceived quality, and overall taste. While price was a factor, the variance was minimal so it didn’t heavily influence my decisions.
Caffeine content also played a role. When I choose a cola, I expect some caffeine, yet many prebiotic options fall short. Fortunately, all brands in the top five included caffeine, steering my choices. For the ultimate experience, I recommend focusing on the top two selections.
