Why Aldi’s Milk Beats Costco’s Every Time

While Costco shines with its bulk goods and is well-known for its $1.50 food court hot dog, there’s a surprising contender for your milk purchases: Aldi.

In times of rising grocery prices, every penny counts, and Aldi’s pricing for milk stands out positively. An informal survey by Simply Recipes shows that Aldi offers the most affordable gallon of milk — beating Costco by $0.69 in some cases. Keep in mind that prices can vary based on location.

Many customers echo these sentiments. A Bluesky user shared her willingness to drive extra just to save on a milk carton, stating, “I will drive an extra few blocks to save $0.70 on a carton of milk.” Another user on Reddit supports this by claiming, “For produce, milk, cheese, etc., Aldi still almost always wins out.” Moreover, milk ranked third on a list outlining overpriced items at Costco.

It’s essential to note that Aldi’s lower prices do not sacrifice quality. Their milk, branded as Friendly Farms, is sourced domestically. This private-label solution competes directly with higher-priced brands. Interestingly, Costco’s milk also falls under their Kirkland Signature brand. The affordability at Aldi largely stems from optimized operations, featuring smaller store footprints, limited hours, a streamlined product lineup, and a commitment to energy efficiency. This structured approach means significant savings for the consumer without compromising milk quality.

Costco milk comes with a catch

If you aren’t serving a large family that drinks milk frequently, purchasing it at Costco might lead to waste. Costco often packages milk in two-gallon jugs, which can lead to spoilage issues. After opening, milk has a short shelf life of four to seven days, making bulk purchases a risk for some households.

Additionally, there’s a quirky concern around the food-safety seal of Costco milk. Some shoppers express frustration with the difficulty of removing the internal seal during the first attempt. The tab often breaks off, complicating the task further. It’s become a common issue, prompting users on Reddit to share hacks on how to circumvent this inconvenience, even posting tutorials that involve using a knife to achieve a clean opening without the splashes.

If you’re aiming to save money, Aldi clearly presents a superior choice for affordable milk. However, if your family can reliably finish at least two gallons quickly and you’re prepared for some creativity with awkward packaging, Costco could serve as an alternative.
